MPP ART 4 SALE! After years of mismanagement, drug, & alcohol abuse, drag-queen-emulating glam rock pioneers & seminal punk band The New York Dolls broke up in 1975 leaving member Arthur “Killer” Kane (named after his “killer” bass lines & a nemesis of Buck Rogers) to eke out an existence on his own in L.A.! He didn’t fare too well & hit rock bottom in the eighties after seeing former band-mate David Johansen in a bit part in Scrooged (1988)! Decades later, pop star Morrissey asks the band to regroup & play London’s Royal Albert Hall! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2006 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Church of the Latter Day Dolls!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! The “North American Man/Boy Love Association” or NAMBLA as it’s better known formed in ‘79 & reached 1500 members at the time of this doc (1994)! Besides the derogatory title (slang for child molester), Chicken Hawk’s pretty impartial as it follows several brazen members & the various persecutions they gotta endure! Authoritative female narration gives historical perspective how ancient civilizations embraced sexual communion with children, like Greeks, Sicilians, & New Guinea tribes who considered semen more potent than mother’s milk! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2010 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Fowl Play?” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! So how’s about that fracking, huh? See Chevron try to pull the wool over Polish farmers’ eyes by assuring them there’ll be no consequences fracking for shale gas on their ancient pastoral soil, where the air’s so clean the region’s known as the “Lungs of Poland”! But documentary filmmaker Lech (Born to Lose: The Last Rock and Roll Movie) Kowalski knows what can go wrong & demonstrates by ricocheting from Pennsylvania to Europe showing what kinda devastation can happen! MPP ART 4 SALE! I thought Last Days was wonderful but someone who grew up with Nirvana once told me they despised the movie & I said I understood because since I grew up with The Sex Pistols I despised Sid & Nancy (1986)! Chronicling the chronic humdrum of Kurt Cobain’s catastrophic collapse days before blowing his own brains out in 1994, Last Days translates (condenses or stretches, you be the judge) the mundanity of his eternal nod into 97 gloriously lensed minutes of confounding contemplation! Extended footages of the most infuriatingly monotonous & inconsequential elements transform the dreary into inexplicably poignant meditative moments! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2005 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Irony is Dead!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! I love drawing cutaways. Blocked from the outside-in by the military, people trapped inside a creaky old building do their darndest to assess the situation by picking at the viscera of fellow victims, gradually piecing together a mutant rabies outbreak! MPP ART 4 SALE! “The keyazid is geyazorge,” exclaims Steven (Scanners) Lack in drug-addled Pig Latin so the person he’s talking about can’t make it out! Shot on The Main & Montreal’s Red Light District! First published in Dr. Tom Waugh’s 2010 Arsenal Press Queer Classics book of the same name about the film! MPP ART 4 SALE! Here’s an oldie dating back from the first year of my second stint at The Montreal Mirror. Early on I used to get more elaborate with my prose, in this instance turning my review into a saucy limerick! SPOILER ALERT: “All in all, a dumb movie, but I’m overly choosy, & I’m all for cheap yucks, but I’d rather spend my eight bucks, on a night home alone with my poo-poo!” This one’s on exhibition at this weekend’s springtime “Long Hauloween” party/fundraiser for the artist-run studio space Long Haul Studios (450 Beaumont Avenue, 2nd floor), so part of the proceeds are going to them, hence the different pricing. Go check it out, lotsa local artists will be exhibiting horror-related art for sale! Saturday, May 21st from 9 pm to 3 am ($10 with costume, $12 without)! The heading for this one which originally appeared in a 1998 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Aw Shucks To Chuck For Chucking Out Creepiness For Cheesiness!” More deets below or contact me for info. MPP ART 4 SALE! During World War 2 Dr Seuss worked under (Colonel) Frank Capra making instructional & propagandistic animated & live-action shorts! Although his work’s been adapted often since, 5000 Fingers was the last Hollywood project Suess had a personal hand in, which he described of as the worst experience of his life! It’s achieved cult status over the years but Fingers was a flop when it first came out & during filming apparently one of the boys threw up on the giant prop piano causing a domino effect! Suess said the film’s reviews were similar! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2006 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Caligari for Kids!” As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. MPP ART 4 SALE! Promoted as Evil Dead (1981) meets Roger Rabbit (1988), Fred (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers) Olen Ray’s clunky cash-in on both those hit flicks kicks off with David (Kill Bill) Carradine trying to do away with an ancient flesh bound book complete with a wise-cracking wrinkly anthropomorphized embossed cover plagiarized from & virtually identical to Evil Dead’s “book of the dead”! Then he hops off a chair with a noose around his neck only to resurrect so he can hand-deliver it to 4 scantily clad bimbos & haunt them! The heading for this Motion Picture Purgatory which originally appeared in a 2010 issue of The Montreal Mirror was “Tasmanian Devilled Hamming!” (The main creature looks like Warner Bros. Cartoons’ “Taz”). As always; the original art’s for sale @ 100 bucks. More deets below or contact me for info. MPP ART 4 SALE! H stands for Hilarity, Heroin, & the Hydrogen Bomb! People start vanishing into thin air around Tokyo after a nearby hydrogen bomb test! Amorphous goop strongly resembles American classic The Blob released the same year, but H-man was actually in production before! Interesting underworld slant & saucy exotica nightclub sequences uncharacteristically scantily clad for the time! “If man perishes from the face of the earth due to the effects of hydrogen bombing it is possible that the next ruler of our planet may be the H-man!” -cautionary voiceover. (As in “H”-bomb; get it?).
